.…The shadow
of the Homa bird
falls upon me,
caresses me.
Its shadow becomes me.
I am the Homa.
I saw Beauty,
drunk,
crying aloud:
“I am the calamity.
I am the calamity.
I am the calamity.”
From every side,
from a hundred souls,
came the reply:
“You are the refuge.
You are the refuge.
You are the refuge.”

We Return to the East on the Night When Light Prevails

Shab-e Yaldā is celebrated in Iran on the longest night of the year, a symbol of the return of light. As darkness deepens, people gather. They sit together around a carefully laid table. A lamp is lit to keep the night at bay. Water stands for purity. Red fruits gleam with the promise of warmth and renewal. Everything is shared slowly as the hours unfold. Voices rise in poetry and in tales passed from one to another. There is laughter, play, and music. Through these simple gestures, Yaldā honors cultural identity, friendship and hospitality, harmony with nature, and peaceful coexistence. Handed down within families and sustained by memory and practice, Yaldā remains alive—an ancient light enduring through the longest night.
